The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society

This is the second time I've read this book. Thank you book clubs.

I reread it so I could remember what I'd forgotten, which pretty much turned out to be everything from the first time. All I remember was that I'd enjoyed the read.

Second time around is a charm.

I love the way the story is told through letters and revolves around Juliet. She is my kind of gal. I enjoy watching her fall in love with this society, the island, and, ultimately, the love of her life.

It brings to light an overlooked part of the world that suffered during WWII. While bringing the tragedies to heartfelt life, the story perpetually offers hope.

A thoroughly delightful read. Well researched. Well told. The characters are fully developed. The writing clean. The themes it explores could take a book club weeks to discuss.

If it comes up in book club again, I'll gladly read it a third time.

“I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers.” January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb….

As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends—and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society—born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island—boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all.

Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society’s members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever.

Written with warmth and humor as a series of letters, this novel is a celebration of the written word in all its guises, and of finding connection in the most surprising ways.

Miss Burton Unmasks a Prince

Miss Burton Unmasks a Prince by Jennifer Moore

Let me just say, I love Ms. Moore's writing. I became a fan with the first novel I read by her, and she continues to delight in every way!

She writes with eloquence, heart, and true to the genre. Plus, I love the cleaness of her stories and writing. No bodice ripping here!

She provides Meg and Rodrigo with plenty of internal and external conflict to keep drawing them together and pulling them apart, all the while tugging at the reader's heartstrings.

I loved seeing a few friends from other books here, esp. Stackhouse!

Enjoy a romantic interlude. Be warned, you'll want to read it cover-to-cover in one sitting!

1812--Southern belle Meg Burton is her parents' last hope of avoiding financial ruin, and a distant cousin's kind gesture seems an ideal solution: He will sponsor Meg for a London Season. The pursuit of a wealthy husband was not exactly how the bookish young woman had envisioned first trip abroad--after all, what does a girl from Charleston, South Carolina, know about being a lady? Amidst the stunning gowns and extravagant balls of the ton, Meg feels like an imposter. Thankfully, she has one friend who knows her true self--Carlo, handsome stable hand. Despite their difference in station, love blossoms between the unlikely pair, and Meg is sure of one thing: She wants nothing to do with the insufferable European aristocracy.
Prince Rodrigo de Talavera has lost everything to Napoleon. Jaded by war, he has become bitter and miserable until he meets Meg--an American woman whose eccentric schemes and passion for life remind him what it is to laugh and to love. If only she knew him for himself and not as Carlo the stable hand. With the shadow of deception looming over their happy acquaintance and the dangers of war drawing evermore near, can Meg and Rodrigo find the courage to put aside their pretenses and discover if they can be loved as they truly are?

Getting Her Groom

Getting Her Groom Book #7 DiCarlo Brides series by Heather Tullis

It seems Ms. Tullis wasn't finished with the series after all and included one more book to tell Angela & Alex's story.

I liked the age difference between them, and Alex's daddy issues regarding it that drove his resistance along.

It was good to see Angela's character grow so much in this book as in book 6 she comes off like a whiny brat. She proves she has depth and strength as much as the other women in this series.

I especially liked the theater element.

A nice way to finish things off.

Amazon

Angela Chestnut can’t wait to move to New York City to fulfill her dream on the stages of Broadway, but first she has to finish her last year of college. When a couple of the student stages are damaged in a flood, she moves the show she has to direct to a local community center in the hopes of raising enough funds that they’ll be able to keep their doors open. But someone wants The Center to fail, and if that means Angela’s show, and her final grade, have to fail as well, they’re totally okay with that.

Since they met at her sister’s place the previous summer, Alex Checketts has had an unhealthy interest (in his opinion) in Angela, who is twelve years younger than he is. He finds himself roped into accompanying the musical she’s written for her project and gets caught up in the mystery behind who is trying to shut down the community center. His attraction to Angela only grows as they spend more time together and her interest in him isn’t helping his resolve not to date her.

Whether they’ll be able to make it work after she moves to New York worries them both. But first they have to survive to put on Angela’s show and save The Center.

The Last Bride

The Last Bride Book #6 in the DiCarlo Brides Series by Heather Tullis

Jonquil and Gage's story is full of suspenseful romance, and I'm not talking about the "Will they or won't they get together?" suspense. We've got some bullets flying, sabotage, and a couple lost marbles to make the story interesting. 'Cause what's love if there isn't mortal danger involved?

The Last Bride closely follows its predecessors in tone and theme. Those who have read the rest of the series won't be disappointed.

Amazon

When Gage learned that George DiCarlo thought he would make a great match for his youngest daughter, Gage was not interested. Not even if she was beautiful, talented, kicked butt on hiking trails and could challenge even his love of skiing.

When Jonquil’s learns about it a year later, her reaction is exactly the opposite. After watching the rest of her sisters fall in love with the men her father hoped they would connect with, she is curious about the one he had planned for her. But Gage is not making it easy and plenty of problems stand between them—her half-sister, Angela, from her family back in Philadelphia seems determined to keep her on her toes and threats against Gage’s family keep them guessing all the way.
