Christmas Romance Collection

Apparently I like reading Ms. Checketts a lot because I'd already read two of the stories in the collection.

These are great holiday reads to escape from the hustle and bustle or just to spend a quiet moment. Each story is sweet, fun, and unique with characters that will linger in your blissful thoughts. Many of these stories fit into other collections by Ms. Checketts

AMAZON

Five complete Christmas romances by #1 bestselling author Cami Checketts.
How to Kiss a Billionaire:
Sassy meets swoon-worthy in this fast-paced contemporary romance.
Miriam Salisbury escapes to Oregon to avoid a boyfriend who won’t take no for an answer, killing her beloved cat to prove it. When her father sends Clay Browning to protect her, she’s certain he’s lost his mind. As far as she’s concerned Clay’s experience is limited to posing for the camera, charming women, and making fun of her. He’s been teasing her since they were children and she’s never gotten over the way he threw crawdads at her at church picnics.
Clay retired from the military and entered the world of private security. When he gets the call to protect Miriam he’s excited to be around his lifelong crush. As expected, he teases her nonstop and the only thing he takes seriously is her security. He knows she’d never give him a chance and he can’t help but give her a hard time.
After Miriam is dumped in the freezing ocean on a crabbing expedition and Clay saves her from drowning and freezing to death, she takes a second look at her hired gun. But opening up to him is more terrifying than facing her stalker.
As events escalate to a frenzied climax, Miriam and Clay must put aside past grudges in the hope of finding a lasting love for their future.

The Faithful One:
Zander Keller survived a stint on reality TV and the addiction recovery center that fame forced him into, but he should never have agreed to do an undercover boss ploy to help his father. The beautiful manager of the Southern bed and breakfast makes him laugh and forget his troubles, until she tries to solve his commitment issues like every woman has since his mother’s murder.
Trin Dean has no intention of becoming besotted with Zander like every other red-blooded female who drooled over him on television. But when he begins helping out at her ancestral bed and breakfast, she discovers the true Zander, who has overcome more heartache than most people can understand. Can she risk falling for him and jeopardize her job and the home her family has treasured for generations?

Oh, Come On, Be Faithful
Former Army security expert Matt Degan is in desperate need of a Christmas miracle. His ex-wife cleaned out his savings account and abandoned their son. Sadly, he has no presents stashed.
When he finds a job as a bodyguard for Mikayla Lambert, a billionaire heiress who has been tormented by a stalker for four years, he’s caught up in family drama that threatens this beautiful woman he’s becoming enamored with and might also endanger his son. Can Matt protect everyone and save Christmas for his son, or will the stalker succeed at kidnapping Mikayla and destroying any chance at love between them?

Christmas Makeover
Chelsea Jamison has been infatuated with Drew Stirling longer than she's loved playing basketball, high-top sneakers, and the Knicks. Unfortunately, all Drew sees is the kid who kicked his trash in the high school free throw contest and not the girl whose heart breaks into a fast dribble when he's near.
Drew makes an unexpected visit home to Echo Ridge and their friendship picks up where they left off as they scheme to make a teenaged boy's Christmas dreams come true. When Chelsea realizes she's fallen for her best friend, she wonders if there is any hope of a relationship with Drew or if she's stuck in buddy-status for life.

Full Court Devotion
Kazlyn is too busy with her schooling and future plans to enjoy life, let alone fall in love with a man who has heartbreak written all over him. Tyrese Hamilton, a college basketball star and major heartthrob, is intrigued when Kazlyn doesn't pursue him or even seem interested. Ty's career is in jeopardy, and he needs a miracle and Kazlyn to save him.

Sugarplums & Mistletoe

Such a lovely holiday read.

Ms. Pennington gives Ruth and Mason lots of reasons, past and present, to stay apart, but they just can't resist each other. This is a predecessor to Ms. Pennington's romantic comedy writing with lots of funny moments and good romantic tension. A clean read with kisses that spark.

AMAZON

He's her biggest competition. She's his greatest temptation.

Ruth Haynes is excited to start another Christmas season selling cookies from her store, Sugar Lips Cookie Company, on Old Main Street in Willow Falls. Everything is shaping up for her to have another successful year—that is until competition comes to town in the form of Mason Baker, the guy who broke her heart in high school. When he opens a chocolate store next door, her cookie business starts to crumble. Still, she can’t help but notice that he’s even more attractive and charming now, and no doubt he still gets everything he wants in life. Too bad he’s never wanted her.

Just when she begins to open up, however, his decision to bid against her for the catering job her business depends on threatens to ruin everything.

The Billionaire's Christmas Hideaway

This story is unique in that our female character is the billionaire.

Poor Reve isn't having a successful romantic life and this last breakup is the worst. She breaks her original family plans to hidout in the snow. Perfect.

I liked Reve's personality and thought Logan was a great complement to her. Fun watching these two overcome their barriers to see if love could be in the cards. I love that she 'rents' Christmas. So fun. Lots of heart in this story by Ms. Montpetit.

AMAZON

My Christmas Plan This Year:

Option 1: Spend Christmas with nosy family members picking at her personal life...or lack thereof. No thank you!

Option 2: Spend Christmas in Los Angeles all alone. Not a chance!

Option 3: A small-town cozy holiday getaway. Yes please!!

One small problem: Logan Redmond.

Revé Chatham sure knows how to pick 'em. After two failed engagements she thinks she's found “the one”, only to have it end—in a very public disaster just before the holidays. All she wants is a man who truly loves her and a kiss that takes her breath away.

Will Revé play it safe, and go back to her lonely city life, or risk her heart once again for the future she longs for?

Romance Your Brand: Building a Marketable Genre Fiction Series

There are many books to choose from on this topic. I picked up this one at a discount to try it out.

I was pleased to find there was plenty of good advice and even homework to do. Much of the homework is downloadable at her site.

The idea I liked the most was to take or leave her advice and tactics because writing is not a one-size-fits-all business. I was welcome to take the cafeteria approach.

Well worth the read and I'm already applying tactics for my next series.

Heavy Without You

Ms. Everly strikes again.

A grab you by the collar story that won't let go and will have you turning pages at the expense of meals, chores, work, and late into the night to finish.

It isn't super long and you'll want to devour it in one sitting. Preferably with cake, though you may not look at frosting the same after reading this story. The plot is full of twists and turns. The characters emotions burst from the pages. You'll want to read it twice to savor the lingering taste of sweetness in your mouth.

Sizzling kisses but nothing beyond.

She awakens a passion he thought was gone. Showing her the love he feels without crossing the lines is not as easy as he thought.

Cai Taylor is confident, bold, and single—with two kids. His wife died eighteen months ago to the day, and he should be ready to move on, according to his secretary, who’s been preparing him for a while to enter the dating world.

He’s had his eye on Kate Windsor. She’s saucy, artistic, and just her walking toward him on the sidewalk gets him all hot under the collar.

That won’t do when he’s the principal and she’s a frequent substitute teacher at his school. To top it off, one minute Kate’s easy going and gives him every sign that she wants him as much as he wants her, and the next minute, she’s standing him up.

If Cai wants difficult, he can just try feeding his toddler lima beans.

Being a principal gives him a professional mindset that won’t allow him to hear no. On the surface, Kate is everything Cai wants in a wife and in a mother for his kids, but as dark secrets unfold, Kate’s past might be harder to overcome than he thought.

★★★★★

Heavy Without You is a sweet contemporary romance. If you like forbidden love; a sexy, confident man; saucy situations; and a woman hiding from her past, then you’ll love this book by E.E. Everly.

Fresh in the Kitchen

I had a lot of fun reading about Aubrey and Tom.

They were a great pair from the beginning. Ms. Burke sets up the tropes, conflict, and stakes from the beginning and hits reader expectations every step of the way.

A fun fresh take on a tried and true trope, and I maybe read at times when I should've been doing responsible things because I was enjoying the story.

FYI, the MC's are a clean and wholesome couple. The secondary characters not as much, but everything is aluded to off page.

Body Beats

If you're an author and need a great way to figure out how to get your character's mood/thoughts across, this is an excellent resource.

Ms. Gardner has done a marvelous job of putting together lists or ways to convey character by breaking them down to body parts. The division is easy to navigate and will up your game as a writer when applied properly.

It's the book I've been looking for and would be an excellent addition to The Emotional Thesaurus.

A must for every genre fiction writer.

AMAZON

BODY BEATS TO BUILD ON is on a mission to nix the same old "he smiled" and "she shrugged," to transform worn-out beats into phrasing the reader won’t flag as been-there-done-that. Need help revolutionizing your tired beats? Now, there’s a resource.

It all starts with a gasp. Fifty-seven of them actually. In one manuscript. You probably just gasped. Or maybe you...gulped air, pulled a sharp breath through your teeth, sucked in a lungful of wind, or took a crisply indrawn breath

The truth is, having numerous inhales over the course of a manuscript isn’t so odd—we humans, even the fictional kind, do tend to breathe. The trouble come with repetition, which readers will interpret as a lack of originality or, Muse forbid, laziness. And they’ll be right.

Staying inventive isn’t easy, though. Especially when it comes to those actions an author can’t avoid repeating, such as gazing, raising eyebrows, making a fist, and the list goes on. Use this fiction writer’s thesaurus to add variety to repetitive body beats!

BODY BEATS TO BUILD ON is an emotion phrase book that provides the bones for fresh, vibrant content. Layer with a little imagination, mix and match, and voilà—endless, unique beats. No more pet phrases. No more wasting time in search of a different way to write "she blushed." Just you and your manuscript climbing to the next level. This easy-to-navigate tool for novelists is a must-have for your fiction self-editing checklist.

Running to You

If you're looking for a clean romance, then Ms. Spencer's book will serve you well.

The HEA I expected. The timeline wasn't what I thought it would be, but as I don't want to give away spoilers, I won't elaborate.

This is a YA/NA age book with likeable characters, a lovely setting (who doesn't love a B&B?), and a few sweet kisses.
There is mention of sex but none happens on page.

Sammy didn’t expect Brandon to look twice. But Brandon didn’t count on Sammy running off with his heart.

First love can be bittersweet in this touching teen romance. Sammy had her sights set on track state finals and never paid much attention to the college guys who came to help her mom run their bed-and-breakfast. But that was before Brandon. He was young and strong and not that much older than Sammy.

Brandon took the job to help pay for college. It sounded easy: live in the apartment above the garage, be the handyman and groundskeeper, and run off to the dorms in the fall. He didn’t count on finding a family. He didn’t count on Sammy running away with his heart.

When tragedy strikes, Brandon has to make a choice. Be the big brother Sammy so desperately needs, or admit his feelings run much deeper.

Financial Residency

If you want a quick and easy, bite-sized way to approach your finances and future retirement plans, this is a good starting point.

There are other books that are more in depth, but I recommend starting here to get your ducks in a row and your paperwork in order. The chapters are concise with overviews and materials to help you get the work done at the end of each one.

This book can apply to anyone, not just those in the medical field.

AMAZON

This book is everything you need to control your financial future.

Creating a financial plan is not all about money, budgeting, and investing--it’s about enabling you to live the life you truly want. Mountains Beyond Mountains

Normally I wouldn't pick up a non-fiction book about a doctor treating infectious disease but this was assigned for book club, so I gave it a try.

And I found Dr. Farmer's work fascinating. Helping the poor and underprivileged were his calling and he carried it out with gusto. I learned tons about a topic I knew nothing about, and can now understand and sympathize with.

Do note, that as the book was written by a journalist, it reads more like a fact text book than an emotionally engaging read.

The narrator was excellent.

Best wishes for Dr. Farmer's legacy to live on.

AMAZON

In medical school, Paul Farmer found his life’s calling: to cure infectious diseases and to bring the lifesaving tools of modern medicine to those who need them most. Tracy Kidder’s magnificent account shows how one person can make a difference in solving global health problems through a clear-eyed understanding of the interaction of politics, wealth, social systems, and disease. Profound and powerful, Mountains Beyond Mountains takes us from Harvard to Haiti, Peru, Cuba, and Russia as Farmer changes people’s minds through his dedication to the philosophy that “the only real nation is humanity.”

Courting Eliza

I give it 2.5 stars.

I honestly debated whether to review or not because I don't like to leave negative reviews. After reading others reviews, I decided mine is in keeping what others have said.

This is a clean and wholesome romance regency style. If that's what you're looking for, you'll be happy with the story. It is on the whole, a lovely little story, though some scenes could use more emotional depth.

Here's where I was challenged in regards to finishing the book, which I did, because I nearly stopped reading multiple times. There are too many good books in the world to spend time on a book that's not suited to your taste.

There were typos/errors on every page, ranging from one to five per page! I know, because I marked every single one of them. I ultimately finished the book just to see if the trend carried to the last page, not because of the story. This isn't why authors want to a reader to finish a book, to see how poor a job they did.

I did check Amazon for an updated version. There isn't one.

I suspect that in the author's haste to get the book out quickly, she forwent having it properly edited or at the least proofread. This was a mistake.

As the book has been out for two years and multiple reviews for this book mentioned the errors, I can only assume the author has neither the inclination nor the time to correct the manuscript. Sad.

I'm unlikely to read another book by this author due to these issues.

The Runaway King

The moment we finished listening to The False Prince, my teenage son loaded up The Runaway King because he coulnd't wait to hear what happened next.

Once again, Ms. Nielsen does a brilliant job of painting Sage into corner after corner as you wonder how in the world is he getting out of this position alive? A total page turner.

Masterfully told, this sequel is equal to the first in the series. I have great expectations for the third installment.

The False Prince

Ms Nielsen is a masteful storyteller.

Every book I read of hers leaves me in awe of her creativity and professionalism.

I enjoyed the twists and turns of the novel and the characters' progression so much that I immediately started the second book.

This story is good for all ages.

Writing Romance is Not About Sex… or is it?: How Far is too Far in Clean Romance?

Ms. Spencer has a new book out that's nonfiction. I think the title tells you quite a bit about the content.

This is a fun, energetic, and light discussion of the topic of sex in romance. Included are some heavy themes that are used in romantic tropes: religious preferences, accidentally crossing boundaries, pregnancy, nonconsenual sex, etc.

She uses examples from contemporary authors to illustrate her points of how sex is represented in romance even when the couples aren't having it. Reading the snippets from these books is half the fun and will pique your interest about the story itself. What happens to these characters? What came before to bring them to this point?

Also that authors have a responsibility regarding their characters in relation to sex and the message it sends to the reader.

This book is great for both readers and authors.

PS You might find a snippet or two from my books in there.

AMAZON

How much sex is too much sex?

•How many kissing scenes are allowed in a clean romance novel?
•What is the difference between Clean & Wholesome, Sweet Romance, and Steamy Romance?
•Where does an author draw the line?
•More importantly, where does the reader draw the line?
•How can I position my book to fit clean romance market trends? and more...

Sex is not dirty. But sex doesn’t need to happen on the pages of a book in order for the book to sell.

Writing Romance is Not About Sex… or is it? How to Write Clean Romance will help you understand how…

•Heat level is often the first thing readers take into consideration when choosing a book. Especially in a romance novel, but in all novels really.
•Heat level can be used to position your book according to market trends and expectations.
•It’s up to us as authors to use our cover design and back copy to make it clear to the reader what our heat level is before they even open the book.
•Sex can be used (or strategically not used) as a literary element.
•Authors have a valuable platform that can be used influence society.
•Definitions and acceptance levels do and have changed and will continue to change.

The Rithmatist

I listened to the audio book on a road trip. My first Mr. Sanderson book.
Really enjoyed it.
Absolutely loved the world building. The desciption of the strategies. The characters come to life on the page. There are twists and turns. Intrigue. Mystery. You end each chapter with more questions of how will this work out or come together.
A great introduction to Mr. Sanderson's works. A good read for MG/YA.
I hope there will be a second in the series. I'd love to read more.

More than anything, Joel wants to be a Rithmatist. Chosen by the Master in a mysterious inception ceremony, Rithmatists have the power to infuse life into two-dimensional figures known as Chalklings. Rithmatists are humanity's only defense against the Wild Chalklings—merciless creatures that leave mangled corpses in their wake. Having nearly overrun the territory of Nebrask, the Wild Chalklings now threaten all of the American Isles.

As the son of a lowly chalkmaker at Armedius Academy, Joel can only watch as Rithmatist students study the magical art that he would do anything to practice. Then students start disappearing—kidnapped from their rooms at night, leaving trails of blood. Assigned to help the professor who is investigating the crimes, Joel and his friend Melody find themselves on the trail of an unexpected discovery—one that will change Rithmatics—and their world—forever.

Bestselling author Brandon Sanderson brings his unique brand of epic storytelling to the teen audience with an engrossing tale of danger and suspense—the first of a series. With his trademark skills in world-building, Sanderson has created a magic system that is so inventive and detailed that that readers who appreciate games of strategy and tactics just may want to bring Rithmatics to life in our world.

Second Chance on the Corner of Main Street

Ms. Easton tells a wonderful second chance romance.

Heartache. Regret. Doubts. Past mistakes that need to be overcome.

Loveable characters. Charming small town. Wounds to heal.

AMAZON

He shattered her heart when he raced out of town 12 years ago. Can she forgive him now that he's back?

Fun-loving Whitney Brennan has been running the presses at the Nestled Hollow Gazette while running from love. She's part of every town gathering, but is terrified of making any real or deep connection with anyone because she knows that if she does, they'll end up leaving like her mother did. Like the man who taught her everything about the paper did. Like her high school best-friend-turned-boyfriend did on graduation night.

Some mistakes are meant to happen.

When Danica Jordan, daughter of the famous actor Samuel Jordan, gets involved in yet another horrible scandal, her father cuts her off, leaving her stranded and forced to get a—gasp!—CLEANING JOB. If that isn’t bad enough, someone keeps leaking photos of her to the paparazzi. All Dani wants to do is disappear.

Famous football star Austin Scott is staying at the Billionaire Club to recuperate from an injury. When Danica mistakes him for a maintenance man, he doesn’t correct her. He really doesn’t even want to talk to her, but she’s in a bad spot and he ends up helping her. The more time he spends with her, the more he falls for her. Except, she still thinks he’s the maintenance man.

Sometimes the truth is better left alone. That is, until it all comes crashing down around you.

Hawaii Ever After

Enjoy escaping to a beautful island of Hawaii in this sweet tale.

Ms. Christensen has crafted a lovely tale between Gracie and Pika, a ballerina and a native Hawaiian coconut cutter. As the story goes, we learn that both are more than what they start out as and together they can help fulfill each other's dreams.

Naturally there's a bit of internal and external conflict to keep the story interesting. And the backdrop is stunning. You'll feel like you're there enjoying the sights with them.

A lovely beach read.

A handsome Hawaiian who chops coconuts for a living.

She arrives on the isle of Kauai for her billionaire best friend’s wedding to consider new job options and ends up dancing with the best man, Pika Sepe. The entire island is filled with romance when she’s with the handsome Hawaiian, but can she truly be happy without dance?

Pika has always worked a blue-collar job and most of the time barely makes ends meet. When Gracie dances into his life, she inspires him to go after his dreams of taking tourists on island adventures. In between deep-sea fishing, sweet kisses, and hikes along the Na’ pali coast, Gracie and Pika each find something they were missing.

When Pika’s ex-girlfriend stirs up trouble, Pika and Gracie must dig deep to find out if their love is meant to be. Can they hold together when people keep trying to pull them apart? Will their love last beyond the beautiful island sunset, or fade into the deep waters of doubt?

Anxious People

I read this for book club or I probably wouldn't have picked it up.

I had a rough start with the unusual style of this book. Mainly because it breaks all the rules of writing. I got 100 pages in, and then gave up.
But after book club and learning more of the story, I decided to give it another try.
I finished the book.

It's a well woven tale, if a bit circuitous, but that is to keep the tension going and the reader turning pages.

Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything, from where they want to live to how they met in the first place. Add to the mix an eighty-seven-year-old woman who has lived long enough not to be afraid of someone waving a gun in her face, a flustered but still-ready-to-make-a-deal real estate agent, and a mystery man who has locked himself in the apartment’s only bathroom, and you’ve got the worst group of hostages in the world.

Each of them carries a lifetime of grievances, hurts, secrets, and passions that are ready to boil over. None of them is entirely who they appear to be. And all of them — the bank robber included — desperately crave some sort of rescue.

As the authorities and the media surround the premises these reluctant allies will reveal surprising truths about themselves and set in motion a chain of events so unexpected that even they can hardly explain what happens next. Rich with Fredrik Backman’s “pitch-perfect dialogue and an unparalleled understanding of human nature” (Shelf Awareness), Anxious People is an ingeniously constructed story about the enduring power of friendship, forgiveness, and hope — the things that save us, even in the most anxious times.
