Inevitable

YA paranormal romance is a little outside of my genre, but I found the hook intriguing. The smell of lemons means death, definitely grabbed my attention.

Jayne is a high school girl who wants a normal life, not to See people's deaths. Poor Jayne. She wants to do so much good and change her visions but doesn't understand how to. Add on top of her troubles a serial killer who's trying to make her his next victim.

There are many relatable themes for teens and adults throughout the story.

It's a clean read. No language. A few simple kisses. There is underage drinking.

Ms. Heiner did a nice job of weaving together entangling elements to keep the reader captivated and wanting to know what happens next.

The future is not ever in motion.

It's all a lie: the thought that the future can be changed. Jayne knows. She's been cursed to watch how the people around her will die, and no matter what she does, she can't change it. That includes Aaron, the handsome English boy who transferred to her school mid-semester and has eyes only for her.

But then a serial killer takes up residence in Jayne's town . . .

And she's on his list.

Finding a way to alter the future has never been more critical.

The first book in the Goddess of Fate series, Inevitable is a suspense novel with a hint of the paranormal. Fans of Bella Forrest will enjoy this new take on an unfamiliar mythology. Romance, magic, suspense - the perfect book to escape into!

The Candy Cane Caper

Sadie is back on the case after a five year hiatus, and is as lovable as ever.

I loved seeing her back. And Sadie is never more on the hunt than when someone she loves has been wronged and is threatened.
I laughed at all the Christmas references to songs and movies.

As always, Sadie's hunt takes many twists and turns before the thief is revealed, not to mention several yummy recipes. Lots of humor mixed with tender moments. This sweet caper is sure to satisfy.

Amazon

She wants just one more holiday to display her ornaments and following Christmas Eve Mass, she’ll pass them on to her great-granddaughter, Joy. With the Magic

So magical. I thoroughly enjoyed the well crafted tale of Gareth coming to the modern world. He finds more than he imagined or bargained for, especially when it comes to Catherine.

It was wonderful to watch Gareth and Catherine try to understand each other and learn from one another.

Aunt Nellie is one of my favorite side characters.

As always, Ms. Weaver spins a beautiful tale.

Amazon

Ready Player One

I listened to this book on the audio version, and half of my delight came from Will Wheaton being the narrator. He was a perfect fit and excellent at giving life to all the voices of the characters.

I'd seen the film prior to reading the book. I think they both stand on their own merits.

I have to say, I think the world builiding is incredible, if at times a little long winded. The characters were real and well crafted.

The plot is captivating. Loved all the 1980s pop culture references.

Heads up: language.

Amazon

It's the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place.
Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of 10,000 planets.
And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune - and remarkable power - to whoever can unlock them.
For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday's riddles are based in the pop culture he loved - that of the late 20th century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday's icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes's oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig.
And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle.
Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt - among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life - and love - in the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.
A world at stake.
A quest for the ultimate prize.

Miracle Morning

This book came to me through book club. I hadn't heard of it before.

The premise of the book was promising, but I got 40% of the way through the text before the author got to the actions I could take to make changes in my life that would revolutionize the way I face the day and live my extraordinary life.
In other words, he's long winded.

I think the principles are sound and I already practice several of them in my own life. Quiet time in the morning to put yourself and your priorities in practice are an excellent idea. I encourage others to do so and use this book to kickstart that habit.

What if you could miraculously wake up tomorrow and any - or every area of your life was transformed? What would be different? Would you be happier? Healthier? More successful? In better shape? Would you have more energy? Less Stress? More Money? Better relationships? Which of your problems would be solved? What if I told you that there is a "not-so-obvious" secret that is guaranteed to transform any - or literally every area of your life, faster than you ever thought possible? What if I told you it would only take 6 minutes a day?
Enter The Miracle Morning. What's now being practiced by thousands of people around the world could perhaps be the simplest approach to creating the life you've always wanted. It's been right there in front of us, but this audiobook has finally brought it to life. Are you ready? The next chapter of your life - the most extraordinary life you've ever imagined - is about to begin. You deserve an extraordinary life. It's time to wake up to your full potential.

Her Ex

I enjoy a good second chance romance and liked the ups and downs Jackson and Isabel went through to come together.

There were several obstacles to overcome: their past, her father, her fiance, and hearts that couldn't move on and challenged their thinking.

Another enjoyable installment.

Her Protector

I've been enjoying this series by Ms. Meyer.

The story gets its start under strange circumstances with James getting a cryptic phone call from his friend and impersonating a mondel to get to the girl who needs rescuing.

As always in romances, Layla and James must work through their own emotional baggage and share it with one another before they can discuss a future together.

An enjoyable installment in the series.

Amazon

Her Protector is Off Limits

James is broken and running from a past he can’t face. He’s fine living his solitary life, away from anyone who he could hurt. Love was the last thing he deserved.

Layla is finished with her no good, ex-fiancé. Just when she thought she’d rid him from her life, James shows up claiming that she’s in danger and must come with him.

Confused and hurt, Layla discovers that her world is destroyed. Despite warning bells, she agrees to travel with James down to his hometown of Honey Grove.

Determined to keep himself closed off, James tries to fight his feelings for Layla. But she’s sweet and gentle and just the thing that's been missing in his life.

If he could only find a way to forgive himself from his past mistakes, he’d love her like she deserves.

If you love broken heroes who are gruff but gentle, you’ll love Her Protector. A sweet romance where two broken hearts are trying to find love together.

A Clever Alliance

Such a sweet and delightful read.

Everyone likes a fake engagement story, regardless of time period.

I liked that Madalene was an original heroine with a prowess for tree climbing, a trait that served her well in escaping danger.

Everrett was the right mix of gentleman with a saucy side.

There's also an element of danger and mystery with her first engagement and dishonest uncle.

A wonderful page turner.

AMAZON

Lady Madalene Ramsbury has been summoned home from Miss Bell’s Finishing School to some unfortunate news. In three weeks, she is to be married to a man she’s never met. Rather than face a life she does not want; she flees from her own engagement party and elicits help from a most unlikely source.

Society’s golden boy, Everett, the Marquess of Northampton, was outraged when a young woman suddenly appeared in his curricle. Was she attempting to trap him into an unwanted marriage? It would be just like some overzealous mother to put her up to such a ploy. However, it doesn’t take long for him to discover that Madalene is unlike any woman he has ever known.

With her reputation in shambles, Lady Madalene and Everett hatch a plan to solve both of their problems, a fake engagement. But as they spend time together, they realize more is on the line than just a blossoming friendship. And with danger ever present from her jilted suitor, Everett and Madalene find themselves relying on one another in ways they’d never imagined… but can they trust each other with their hearts?

For the Magic

Another wonderful tale by Ms. Weaver.

I’m a fan of the Twickenham series and enjoy each book I read. If you’ve read other books in this series, you’ll recognize some characters from past books. And of course, it wouldn’t be Twickenham without Aunt Nellie. She’s a fan favorite for sure.

Time travel at Twickenham takes an unexpected twist when travel happens twice in the same night, leaving Michael and Ellen burned and scarred in 1851. They must take time to heal away from the other guest in Nellie’s house. This creates an unusual intimate experience for them, and is an ideal way to bring them into a romantic relationship. Secrets lurk in Michael’s past, which if he takes too long to reveal may cost him Ellen. He’ll need time to unriddle other family mysteries while at Twickenham.
I enjoyed Michael and Ellen’s shared love of gardening, and Lulu’s insistent coughs.

A charming read, that will keep you guessing until the end which time period Michael and Ellen will choose to build their future in.

Well done, Ms. Weaver.

When Lady Ellen Hildebrand is ripped to the future, she finds herself not only fighting for the fae magic that sent her but also for her life.

Ellen’s first London Season was a disappointment. She fears she’ll never meet a man who will see her for more than her fortune or ability to provide an heir.

Landscape architect Michael Addington thinks his grandfather is mental but never dreams the old man will try to set Twickenham Manor on fire. In Michael’s struggle to stop the act of arson, a young woman appears out of nowhere. Flames and fae magic engulf them both, the first burning them badly and the second transporting them back to 1851.

Ellen and Michael find they must rely on each other through the painful recovery. Day by day, their attraction grows. But Michael is riddled with guilt. If she discovers his dark secret, he could lose her forever . . . he’s the one who set her on fire.

Miss Weston’s Wager

Ms. Newbold’s book is constructed around William’s missing memories of his past, especially the memories involving Harriet, and a wager.

The characters and setting of Brighton draw you in, leaving you as lost and wondering as William as to what happened to estrange him and Harriet in the past and how they will move forward in the future, depending on whether his memories return or not.

There are family undercurrents of drama and expectation at play.

The characters and emotions are well constructed, and make them likeable and desirable. You feel their hopes and fears on every page.

This a heartfelt sweet read. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.

A forgotten past, an impossible wager, and a second chance.

Despite her every effort, Harriett Weston cannot forget the boy she once loved—or the day she banished him from her life forever. Trapped in a wager with her matchmaking sister, she can no longer avoid William forever. She is required to endure three meetings with him, the beginnings of a courtship that could easily undo the determination of her carefully guarded heart.

Matters are further complicated when an opportunity arises for Harriett to go to London for the upcoming season, and William’s return to Brighton leaves him injured and unable to remember his past. When Harriett is credited for saving his life, William is drawn to her, believing that she can help him unravel the mysteries of his lost memory. Even his lost memories of her.

When a wicked force tries to keep them apart, can Harriett and William overcome regret, find courage, and claim a second chance at love?

Three Fortunes for the Billionaire by Donna Weaver

Another excellent installment in the REKD series.

Ms. Weaver sweetens the plot by giving her hero a stress-induced speech impediment. I absolutely loved the way this endeared the hero to the reader while giving him a believable flaw that the reader could encounter in a person in their every day life. Working through this challenge is part Ezreal’s character arc and is handled beautifully.

I liked that Sara had real problems. An abusive ex-husband she’s trying to protect her children from for starters. But she also wants to make the world a better place and give underprivileged children a chance to study music. Sara is likeable but flawed, an excellent combination in a heroine.

The story was sweet and a page turning read to see how Ezreal and Sara would overcome their individual and relationship problems.

Be sure to read all the books in this series. It doesn’t matter what order.

***A clean billionaire romance***

Musician Ezreal Wallach might be a billionaire, but he can’t talk in front of crowds—or unfamiliar women. Become a Successful Indie Author

This book may’ve come out a few years ago, but it is full of relevant information for the present-day Indie author.

Mr. Martelle is open and candid in sharing relevant business information and sources/authors/mentors he’s found particularly helpful on his own writing journey. He recommends certain of these people but without a sales pitch.

His writing is straightforward and concise. He offers a wonderful list of links to help the author find the information in one place instead of having to bookmark multiple pages throughout the text.

I recommend this book for anyone pursuing an Indie author career.

Word of warning: there is language in this book, but Mr. Martelle is pretty good about letting you when it’s coming up so you may skip over those parts if you’re sensitive to those words.

Love at Lakewood Med

Love at Lakewood Med by [Amberson, TJ]
One of my pet peeves about reading medical romances is when the author gets the details wrong. I'm so happy Ms. Amberson got them right.

This book is more of a coming of age story with a romantic thread than a die hard romance IMO. The writing is good, the characters well shaped and relateable, and there's good description.

A good clean read with a satisfying ending.

I'd love a bonus chapter from Wes's point of view.

The publisher let a few typos through.

AMAZON

Savannah Drake would be thrilled about starting her final year of medical school if it weren’t for one thing: she has to spend a month working in the emergency room with cold, aloof Dr. Wesley Kent as her mentor. When her first day in the ER proves to be a humiliating disaster, Savannah is ready to swear off emergency medicine forever. Gradually, though, she finds that the unpredictable, emotional experience of caring for patients in the emergency room is affecting her far differently than she expected—and Dr. Kent turns out to be anything but the arrogant attending physician that she assumed him to be. But just when Savannah finally admits to herself that she is falling for Dr. Kent, she learns that things at the hospital are not all what they seem. Faced with a seemingly impossible choice, Savannah must decide between her future career and everything that she has come to care so much about.

This is a fun romance set in the south. Poor Beth. She gets constantly having her world turned upside down. And Josh has to deal with his ex-wife issues.

Well written, fleshed out characters, and a family I'm looking forward to reading more about make this story a winner.

Perfect Set

Perfect Set by [Jacobson, Melanie]

The beginning of this book makes me chuckle. The love interests get off to a bad start and it doesn't get better anytime soon, which makes for good humor. Their constant misunderstandings are imaginative and believable.

It's a sports romance. The characters are likable, well fleshed out, and easy to become emotionally invested in.
Clean romance, solid writing, and set in sunny California. A great escape anytime of year.

AMAZON

Bree Mercer is an ambitious sports reporter who has risen through the ranks to land her dream job. Basking in the sun, sea, and seriously cute guys in her new singles ward, things couldn’t be better. That is, until she’s assigned to write a feature on the one person she can’t stand—professional beach volleyball player Kade Townsend. A typical cocky athlete, Kade’s previous attempt to woo her was foiled by Bree’s hard-and-fast rule: don’t date athletes. Ever.

Now reformed, Kade has put his life back together, and he has no interest in talking to reporters—least of all, Bree Mercer. But when the pair is thrown together despite their best efforts, their chemistry is undeniable. They can’t seem to put the brakes on their feelings—until their connection threatens Bree’s reputation and Kade’s hard-won redemption. Now they must decide if there is a place for love in their plans for the future.

Escaping Neverland

I've read a few of Ms. Lemon's books and they are always a joy to read. Escaping Neverland is no exception.

This is Peter Pan as it's never been told. In this verson, Peter is growing up and must either leave Neverland for good or turn pirate. He seeks a replacement and believes he finds one in Jane. Except there's a romantic thread. You can guess who's involved, and it's not Captain Hook!

Lots of emotion, clear writing, beautiful world building, and pure imagination fuel this twisted retelling of the boy who wouldn't grow up.

This story will appeal to all, and keep you guessing until it's satisfying end.

I love the cover!

Amazon

Reluctant to abandon the Lost Boys, Peter searches for someone who can care for them and withstand the dangers of Neverland. The Second Chance Patriot: A Sweet Football Romance (A Georgia Patriots Romance) by [Meyer, Anne-Marie]

Talk about a complicated past in a second chance romance. A single mother with a secret. A big shot football player. I'm not much for sports romances often, but this one was worth the read.

Rapid Release: How to Write & Publish Fast For Profit by [Allen, Jewel]

This book will take your breath away and leave you exhausted on Ms. Allen's behalf. The schedule she planned and maintained is not for the faint of heart, but shows where there's a will, there's a way. And Ms. Allen knows the way.

There is lots of good information about how to rapid release a series in here. She shares her personal experiences, both positive and negative, about why and how she chose this method for getting her books into readers hands, and the payoff for doing it so quickly.

If you've been contemplating rapid release of your books, I recommend reading this first and following her advice as much as you want to apply it to your situation. It certainly motivated me.

When novelist Jewel Allen's earnings tapered to a buck per month for each of her 11 books on her back list, she knew she had to change her self-publishing model. Applying the principles of rapid release, where an author publishes fast to keep readers’ interest before the dreaded 30-day cliff, she started a to-market series and recouped five times her investment in 30 days. She repeated it, not just once, but six times on her way to energizing her publishing career.

In this book, learn how Jewel:
*spotted a hot publishing trend for a series
*wrote and published quality 50k-word novels monthly
*overcame the mind games that shut down productivity
*launched a series with a bang despite a small fan base
*earned a profit from a series immediately
