North by Northwest

This was my first Hitchcock film by Hitchcock. I saw the film titled Hitchcock earlier this year.

This film is touted as the predecessor of all the James Bond films and action films as we know them. This would be the original 'spy' film so to speak.

And for a film done in the 1950's I'd say it's not bad, especially considering the time period it was set and filmed in. I imagine it had people on the edge of their seats back then, but for a modern day audience member, it's just an average film.

I guess, I also expected more suspense from a Hitchcock film and this one just didn't have it for me. I suppose I should try Psycho or The Birds if I want those elements.

Worth a view?: No. Unless you're a big film history fanatic.

Do you have a Hitchcock film you recommend?

  1. Isn't this the one that ends around Mt. Rushmore? Lots of subtle sexual symbolism in that one.

  2. I sort of grew up on Hitchcock and other old movies (even though I was born in the '80s), so my suggestions may not be your cup of tea. That said, I wouldn't bother with The Birds if I were you. One of my least favorite, and really only interesting if you do it in 3D. I suggest Charade if you want a little romance with your mystery (and some Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn). Or To Catch a Thief (again with the romance). Rear Window, Rebecca, Strangers on a Train. Psycho is probably a good one for the pop culture of it, but otherwise I didn't particularly love it. Have fun. Hitchcock is fantastic from a film/cinematography study, and I think his movies have aged wonderfully. But I guess it all depends on what you're interested in.

  3. It's been years since I've seen it, but I remember really liking this movie. Of course, I kind of have a thing for Carey Grant . . .
Once I read somewhere that his suit in this show is the pinnacle of men's tailoring. Ever. I don't remember much about the suit, but the movie was fun. Have you seen Rear Window? I liked that one too.
