Cinderella & The Book of Life

I haven't been posting lately on the movies I've been catching up on. Over the weekend I caught up on these two movies.

I actually went to the theater! I can't even remember what I last saw in the theater, it's been that long. Sad.

Cinderella was lovely.

I know there's been alot of backlash in the media about it, but spare me the drama. It's a fairytale. Kids get that. They grasp it. Sadly, and all too soon, they grow out of it.

First off, I'm a Lily James fan. I adore her on Downton Abbey. I loved watching her in this film. Somehow she is beautiful when wearing 'natural' makeup. Not all actresses can pull that off. She can and does. Only two questions. How heavy is the blue dress? How does she curtsy that low without falling over?

The prince is okay. Not my style of prince. But he gets the job done. And since when is Kit a prince's name?

Loved all the actors/actresses playing side characters. Recognizable faces and names. Great cast!

I totally want to go live on the set. Gorgeous!

Worth a view? Yes.
Worth a buy? Yes. We're big Disney fans here. Set up the preorder now.

Oh, and the word is that Emma Watson's been cast as Belle for the live version of Beauty and the Beast. Can't wait!

The Book of Life

This is like the Mexican version of Corpse Bride.

I found it fun and funny. All the songs had me cracking up. Clean humor. Good for the whole family.

Excellent animation. Lots of style.

Totally Team Manolo from the start.

Worth a view? Yes.
Worth a buy? I would watch it again but my kids weren't as taken with it. So, no. But I would like to get the sound track!

What did you watch this weekend?

The Amazing Spiderman 2

Up front I have to say, I'm lean more toward loving the franchise with Tobey McGuire. Transitioning to this Spiderman in the first one was a little challenging for me.

That said, I liked this one better than the first one in this franchise. Maybe it was because I was used to the actors portraying the characters or maybe it was just better. Spiderman definitely looked more the part this time.

New bad guys, Harry - predictable, Electro - had no idea that was even a villain in these comics, but as I've never read them I just have the films to go by. I know, every die hard comic Spidey fan just shook their head and exited the rest of this post. I apologize to them. I read books, not comics. I didn't even really read the 'funnies' in the newspaper growing up. To each their own.

That all said, there is plenty to like in character portrayal, tension, graphics, stunts, etc. All is up to par there.

What I couldn't believe was the ending. I won't spoil it, but let me just say I sat there in shock. Sad, sad, sad.

Will there be a third? I'd count on it. The current owners to the rights of Spiderman films get to keep them provided they produce a film every so many years as stated in the contract. If not, it goes to Disney, as they now own the rights to all things Marvel. Interesting huh?

Worth a view? Yes.

Worth a buy? We don't have it, but it's one I'd watch again. Maybe we'll pick it up as part of a complete package when they are done with this line of Spidey.

Rio 2

As sequels go, it's pretty good.

We'r off to the Amazon where, gasp, we discover Blue and Jewel aren't alone in the blue macaw universe. Their kids have a whole flock of family to enjoy.

There are the usual ups and downs of integration and saving their environment from illegal loggers, etc.

All the old cast are back to lend their voices and tell their story.

It has its funny moments and yes, singing and dancing.

Worth a view? Sure.

Worth a buy? Not now. Maybe later for the right price. One view was enough for me and my kids haven't asked to see it again yet.

Do you think there'll be a third Rio?

After all, we haven't found Blue's family yet.

The Hundred Foot Journey

As you can tell, it's been a slow summer in regards to my movie viewage. I really haven't gone out to see anything new in the theater or rent much on the Redbox. It's been a busy summer in so many ways, but that's not why you're here. You want to know what I thought about the movie. Read on.

I liked it. It's a nice good feeling movie that makes you want to head into the kitchen and cook. Or eat at a fancy restaurant that will feed you yummy food. Or maybe not so fancy.

I enjoyed the simplicity of the film. Picturesque France, spicy Indian food, romance, and the combination of it all that takes you more than one hundred steps to complete the journey. It was beautiful, humble, feisty, and with easy to love characters. Everyone had a dream they hoped to fulfill through food.

Be sure and eat before you view this or you'll be starving all the way through. Pick French or Indian to satisfy the taste buds, or whatever you have on hand. Your pick. It's a great dinner and a movie choice.

The acting is soulful, even if Helen Mirren's Brit accent leaks through in places, but her French is impeccable, so all is forgotten. At least, I think the French is, not being a fluent speaker of that language.

It is a slow moving movie with excellent pacing. Not the right one for when you're in the mood for action.

It's pretty clean with occasional kisses and possibly one swear word. There is a tragedy to start with, so be aware. Also, there was one snippet near the end between the romantic pair implying they'd celebrated by having sex at work, which was totally unnecessary and momentarily cheapened their relationship for me.

Worth a view? Yes.

Should you catch it in the theater or on the Redbox? Redbox. Although it made for a lovely Girls Night Out.

Do you prefer French cuisine or Indian?

Oblivion

Not sure how long this one has been out, but I'd been curious to see it.

The concept is intriguing. Earth only has one inhabitable area and it's one couple's job to secure that area against the scavengers. They are only two weeks away from freedom, i.e. returning to space. Except, the guy is to curious, has dreams that feel like memories, and has built himself a forbidden retreat on the ground.

Lots of interesting twists. It kept me guessing and entertained. But somethings were obvious, like who the mystery girl was that we're likely in for a happy ever after. Always fun to watch an actor/actress have to play multiple parts. Hard to discuss the plot without giving things away.

One question: why does the redhead never have any underwear on? Great clothes. But really?

So, PG-13 for nudity, guns, violence, you get the idea.

Worth a view? Yes. In fact I might want to watch it again.

Worth a buy? Maybe. For the right price, as in really cheap.

RIPD

So I guess this one is based on a comic book series?

Pretty simple plot. Guy dies. Wishes he wasn't dead so he could still be with his wife. Gets the choice of going to hell or being an after life cop. He picks option 2, assumes the identity of an older Asian man, and gets partnered up with an Old West Marshall to fight the Deados.

Seems plausible. Right the wrongs. Save the world. Exact revenge on his old partner. Redeem his soul. But you can't be made alive again. Bummer. Kills the romance aspect in a big way.

Some funny moments. Esp. when the camera view switches from who the cops really are as to how the living see them. Good cast.

This one is sort of in the middle to low end of the spectrum. I can't imagine there would be a sequel even though they left it open for one.

Worth a view? Sure. I watched it for free one night. And it's pretty short as films go.

Worth a buy? No. I would not pay money for this film. I imagine it didn't do well at the box office. Some stories are better left as comics.

Is there an untold comic series worth turning into a movie?

The Lego Movie

It was weird. I didn't get it.

That being said, the graphics were top notch and my kids enjoyed it and would like to watch it again. I don't need another viewing.

The Legos were cute and the vocal cast was great, but the story line was weak and then it went into live action, which totally pulled me out of the flimsy story. And it wasn't nearly as funny as I'd hoped.

It just didn't work for me. I know I'm in the minority for this one. I'm okay with that.

Will you kids like it? Yes. Good for all ages.

Worth a view? Once.

Worth a buy? No.

Did you like it?

The Adjustment Bureau

This one sat on the DVR for about 6 months before I got around to watching it. My storage on the DVR is now clear.

Not sure why it sat there so long. I thoroughly enjoy the work of the two main actors: Emily Blunt & Matt Damon. That usually is enough to sell me to watch a film.

The concept is pretty original. It's a take on God and how he either directs our path or allows us to make our own choices and direct the path ourselves. The Adjustment Bureau are immortals/angels who keep us on the Chairman's predetermined path. The issue comes when things don't go according to plan or a long term pre-planned life gets a major directional change but the foundation is already set for the first path and the subconscious keeps trying to direct us back to the original.

The thinking behind this film, along with the script, are applaudable. That's not really a word, but I couldn't quiet find the right one. It gets your brain wondering about the concept of life, our control over it, the idea of agency and how it affects our path.

The actors portrayal of the characters really drives the film. I had no idea Emily Blunt was a professional dancer, but she doesn't use a double and the choreography involved takes a pro level dancer. Really impressive. It added to my admiration for her and her craft.

PG-13 for steam, it is a romance after all. A few words of language. A few well aimed punches round out the violence factor.

Worth a view? Yes. I think this satisfies the romance angle for the girl while engaging the guy with the suspense and action.

Worth a buy? Not sure this is one I would watch over and over again. Catch it through a cheap option.

Do you think our lives are 'adjusted' as the movie suggests?

Maleficent

The real story behind Sleeping Beauty is not what you'd expect and I enjoyed every minute of it!

There are all the elements of the beloved Disney classic but seen from a very different view point.

The sets/CG work are outstanding. But, then I didn't expect anything less.

The costumes are beautiful.

I'm not the biggest Jolie fan, but I don't dislike her either. This film could change my mind, about becoming a fan. She was the perfect Maleficent. Don't be distracted by the cheek implants. Personally, I wondered if they hurt at all, but of course they are exterior prosthetics. I was totally impressed at the way she moved, talked and laughed. She had to be a likable villain. Not the easiest of tasks and she did it with style.

Fave side characters, the three fairies, esp. the pink one, and the crow.

The king gets seriously paranoid. He should. I wouldn't be dumb enough to cross Maleficent.

Worth a view? Yes. But I would say for the 8+ crowd. I didn't take my 6 year old to see it. Too intense. But my 9 year old thoroughly enjoyed it.

Worth a buy? Yes. We'll watch this one many times.

So, which version is the truth?

G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation

My husband I can't recall if we ever saw the first film in this franchise. If we did, then apparently it wasn't memorable.

Not sure if this one is either.

Okay, so the story line isn't too hard to figure out. G.I. Joe team vs. Cobra. That whole concept is what built the franchise and made boys of the 1980s happy for endless hours.

Presumably they brought back the original cast for the sequel and it's a decent cast. There's a surprise role, by an ultimate action film actor, who I won't name or it will ruin it for you. But, what I totally couldn't fathom was the death of a main character a mere 15-20 minutes in. That means that character won't be back in any subsequent films. I'm not sure that was a good move for the franchise.

The ending is left open for another film. We'll see.

Worth a view? Sure.

Worth a buy? No. There are other action films more deserving of your money. Catch it on Redbox, etc.

Does anyone know if it lived up to the first G.I. Joe or if all the actors came back?

The Monuments Men

This is based on a true story. It took a little bit of courage for me to watch it. I gave up watching war movies nearly fifteen years ago. I just can't handle the emotional impact. I had grandfathers serve in WWII. Both of them lived with all limbs intact. But, I get torn up thinking of all those who died, families torn apart, loved ones never reunited, etc.

This one looked like mostly art but little war coverage. I'm grateful I was right. So if you're a lightweight, like me, when it comes to war films, you'll be okay.

It's an amazing cast used to tell the story of how about 6 men, mostly various types of art curators, prepared for war only by boot camp, make it their mission to recapture all the art stolen by the Nazis as they ravished Europe. The odds are against them and sadly not all of the men survive. But what they accomplish in preserving the culture of the human family is astonishing.

This movie, well set in Europe, is really held together by the cast. The men don't disappoint and hold their standard deliveries high. The one token female role is fulfilled by Cate Blanchett, who nearly steals the show.

Film is PG-13 for violence and language. Can't be surprised by that in a war film. But neither is excessive. I think there were half a dozen words I wouldn't use to be found in the script.

Worth a view? Yes.

Worth a buy? Only if you're a big war buff. I suggest Redbox or another inexpensive option. But of course, not pirated.

Hop

Easter as nearly a month ago, but life has been busy between then and now and this post is overdue.

Hop is cute and the story line wasn't what I expected from the previews. I thought the dark haired lead male (James Marsden) and the featured blond female (Kaley Cuoco) would be boyfriend & girlfriend, but it turns out they are siblings. That changed the film significantly for me i.e. it wouldn't be a RomCom, just a Com.

But as I said, it's cute. The soon-to-be Easter bunny wants to be a drummer and Marsden's character is a drift and in need of a job. Guess what happens?

Easter is nearly ruined by the head Chick who wants to be the Easter bunny. See, not what you thought.

Lots of fun cameos and fun moments.

Worth a view? Yes. Cute to watch at Easter time.

Worth a buy? No. Rent it or DVR it off tv like we did.

What did you think of Hop?

Gravity

Uh, I don't know what to say about this one.

I didn't 'get' it.

Worth a view? Maybe.
Worth a buy? No. I wouldn't watch this one again, but it wasn't a time waster like some other films I've seen when I wish I could get back that 120 minutes of my life and use it for something better.

TOTAL SPOILERS BELOW!

Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) spends the entire 90 minuteish film going from one disastrous spaceship/station to another. She decides to die in space but then after a 'visit' from Matt (George Clooney) she decides that life is worth living and to do all she can to return safely to earth or die trying.

She does make it to earth, lands in a lake, nearly dies swimming out of her flooding pod and is the sole survivor of all the catastrophic spaceships/stations she spent time on, which were basically all the ones around Earth.

What?

We have approximately seventy minutes of Dr. Ryan alone in space and twenty minutes (if that) of her with Matt. So, if you're a Sandra Bullock fan, she gets loads of screen time. If you're a George Clooney fan you have less luck. Go watch Ocean's Eleven instead.

The effects are top of the line and the acting is superb. The word on the street is the real astronauts say it's the most true to life film of what they go through up in space (minus all the fatal catastrophes). And at the end, no one comes to find her and/or she still has the challenge of finding 'civilization'. Those parts would've been worth watching.

But, I just didn't get it.

The real question is whether it's possible for a debris storm to circle the Earth and destroy all of our satellites and space stations. What do you think?

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Is Captain America 2 every bit as good as the first film? You betcha!

I may have even liked it more!

Steve Rogers is always striving to do the right thing. It's not about being on the winning side. It's about truth and right free of pride. How can you not get behind a guy like that?

The themes of the movie are simple. What is truth? What is right? Are they the same? What do you do when they are different? And the biggest one: who can you trust in a network of spies who do work for the 'greater good' of man? Because not everyone agrees on what that is.

Hydra comes back into play. Peggy is back. (Did they CG her age or was that all make-up?) Steve's scene with her is one of my favorites from this film. It's very short, but says so much. I love having Black Widow side by side with Captain America. One of my fave moments is of them on the escalator and another is the War Games reference. When is that girl going to get her own film already?!

Lots of action, graphics, etc. All the stuff you come to see and appreciate that make a great action film, including those great one line nuggets of humor. Solid acting all around.

The best part of this film is the character development of Captain America. That is what drives and really makes this story work for me. I hope they can carry it through to the third film. They didn't for Iron Man 3 and it took away from the story for me.

When the biggest plot twist was revealed, I didn't see it coming and felt totally stupid, because they totally foreshadowed it and I still didn't see it coming at me. That's good storytelling and keeping the viewer in the moment so they don't have time to think ahead. Well done screen writers.

My only criticism is the last shot of the main part of the film. Captain America is looking down at something he's holding and Falcon is standing just behind him to the right. That is where the cut happens. It should have ended with Captain America's eyes coming up to hit the camera and then cut. Just my opinion. But I think it would've made the ending stronger.

Stay to the end. The very end of the credits. You don't want to miss that last scene/shot.

Can't wait for Captain America 3!

Worth a view? Absolutely! I'm so glad I saw it in theaters!

Worth a buy? Preorder today!

Did you think Captain America: The Winter Soldier was a worthy sequel? Why or why not?

Austenland the Film

I watched this with a crew of women at Girls Night Out/In. Half had seen it, half had not. I fell into the latter category.

It was a hoot!

They changed some things from the book, although, I couldn't see the benefit of what they changed, but it all worked out.

Hilarious watching these women act. And the men weren't far behind. The attempts at British accents and phrases is priceless.

Thoroughly enjoyed Kerri Russell.

Worth a view? Yes.

Worth a buy? No. I'd rather read the book again.

Great for a GNO!

Have you read Midnight in Austenland? Should they make that a film?

Divergent the Film

You should know first that I didn't read the books, so I can't compare the movie to the book. If you're looking for a review that does that, then you should look somewhere else.

That being said, I also didn't know anything about the series except that it's dystopian before I saw the film. At least knowing the genre gave me certain clues as to what I'd be watching.

I liked the film. I hope they make the rest of the trilogy. And, yes, these books are now on my 'to read' list.

This story has plenty of twists and turns and I never really knew where I was going next or where I might be by the end. Would Tris be dead? (Not likely since I know there are two more books). Who would die? Who would live? Would she defy The Society?  Mostly likely. That's usually what heroines do in this genre. Will the Society embrace her? Leave her factionless? Would Four turn out to be a bad guy in disguise?

I thoroughly enjoy movies that constantly raise questions as we flow along. This had great pacing, character motivation, dialogue (I never once cringed) and while it's PG-13 for the violence, the love interest only goes as far as kissing. I don't recall any language.

I was totally good with the casting. Nice to see Kate Winslet play the mean girl for a change. And I'm glad they picked relative unknowns for Tris and Four.

My fave scene was the train once everyone's been 'dosed'.

Frankly,I think being divergent and being able to think outside the 'box' is something the Society should be revering not exterminating. But then, that wouldn't be very exciting, now would it?

So, if you like The Hunger Games, I'd go see this one.

Worth a view? Yes.
Worth a buy? I definitely want to see it again. I'll wait and see if they make all the books into films and buy them as a pack. If not, I'll probably pick it up.

Would you want to be divergent?

Thor 2: The Dark World

Who knew you could like a Norwegian god with a cape and blond flowing locks who swings a mean hammer so much?

Actually, I was thrilled to see so many of the cast back in action in this fun flick. I especially like the interaction between Thor and Jane and Loki. My favorite part was when Jane punched Loki. He totally deserved it and his reaction is priceless. That's not a spoiler, it's in the trailer. Oh, I finally figured out that Zachary Levi, (the blond sword swinger) is Eugene from Tangled. Who knew?

The story is well plotted and the action moves along. There are intergalactic space time problems to solve, a bad guy to fight and a touch of romance, all the trappings of a good super hero film. It does make you wonder, in a fun way, if this could all happen. I think I'd need the characters of the Big Bang Theory to hash that one out. How cool would that be to have them analyze all the Marvel films? CG work is up to par.

I will miss the one character who won't return for Thor 3. (There is going to be a Thor 3, right?)

Worth view? Yes!

Worth a buy? Yes! I'll be watching this one over again.

Did you think it was a good as Thor I? I did. Are you excited for Captain America 2? I am!

Ender's Game

I read this book, along with the next 3-4 in the series, somewhere in the last 5 years, so my comparison of the book to the film at this point wouldn't be accurate.

That being said, I think the film is pretty much spot on with what I do recall. The story line is close, if not exact.

I think it's hard to make a space movie. Not a lot of scenery out there. Plenty of special effects.

The casting is solid. Everyone who appears on the screen seems made for their part in the film.

While it's not a dark film, there isn't much levity. Only a few humorous moments. After all, we are talking about a film where the purpose is the extinction of an alien species.

Worth a view? Yes.

Worth a buy? Hmm. Not necessarily. We did. But, I don't think it's one I'll be asking to watch over and over again. Maybe every few years or so.

Did you think the movie held up to the book?

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2

Watching this movie was a surprise. Frankly, the first one is fun and even at times clever, but I wasn't sure whether a sequel would be viable or even what they could come up with in terms of a storyline.

So, we're back to the island and this time instead of a situational villain we have a human villain. Choices of ethics. Right vs. wrong. Greed. Friends. Family. Lots of variables in play.

You need to be familiar with puns to figure out what the food animals are on the island. I was a bit slow on the uptake and my family had to explain the names. We never did figure out the marshmallows.

Worth a view? Sure.

Worth a buy? Possibly. We bought it, but I hadn't planned on it.

Do you think they'll make a third?

The Lone Ranger

I hadn't heard any rave reviews on this one, so I had low to no expectations. That was good.

Because it was only passable. Somehow, this movie just didn't come together. I couldn't figure out if it was the story, the acting, the predictability, or what the problem was. It wasn't a waste of two hours, but it just wasn't great. That's a lot of money to spend on a so-so film.

Worth a view? Not really.

Worth a buy? No.

Did you like it?
